The Abels

What is an Abel? Back in the early 1990s, a Tasmanian by the name of Bill Wilkinson came up with the concept of 'The Abels'. He had seen similar classifications such as 'The Munros' in the United Kingdom and thought that Tasmania could also have a collection of mountains defined by certain criteria. Thus the Abels was born. An Abel is a Tasmanian mountain at 1100 m or above in height and with a minimum drop of 150 m on all sides. I would like to complete all of the peaks on the list of Abels, however it wasn't really a priority in the first 20 or so years of my hiking career. I started really trying to tick off the peaks with real gusto in around 2017. Below is a collection of the blog posts about walks I have undertaken involving Abels. You can visit The Abel Mountains website for more information.
