Ever find yourself wide awake at 2am, legs on cold ground, wondering if this is just part of hiking?

I used to think so. On a 26-day trek through Southwest Tasmania, I slept on a half-length pad and stuffed spare clothes under my legs every night. By 2am, those clothes would shift, and I’d be wide awake, shivering, trying to fix it. Twenty-six nights in a row.

At the time, I thought this was just the trade-off for saving weight. That’s what everyone did, right? Push through, tough it out, and call it “part of the adventure.”

But here’s what I learned: broken sleep isn’t just a minor inconvenience. It compounds. By night five or six, I was making worse decisions, my pace dropped, and my mood took a nosedive — all because I never really recovered between days. The “weight savings” cost me energy, focus, and enjoyment for the entire trip.

Here’s the real kicker: Sleep isn’t a luxury on a multi-day hike. It’s your recovery system. Compromise it, and everything else suffers.

Why “Luxury” Isn’t Always Optional

Years later, I switched to a quilt — lighter, easier to vent, more packable. But cold air kept sneaking in at night, waking me up over and over. The fix? A simple pad sheet that anchored my quilt edges. Suddenly, I slept through the night. No drafts, no twisting, just comfort.

That pad sheet? I’d thought of it as a “nice-to-have.” Turns out, it was essential.

The Core-Plus Method: Smarter, Not Heavier

This is where the Core-Plus Method changed my thinking. Your Core sleep items — pad, insulation, pillow — are non-negotiable. But Plus items aren’t just “comfort extras.” Sometimes, they solve problems that quietly wreck your Core system.

  • A quilt that actually stops drafts? That’s Plus gear earning its place.

  • An inflatable pillow for neck pain? Not a luxury — it’s the difference between sleeping and just lying there.

The real question isn’t “is this the lightest?” It’s: “Will leaving this behind cost me more than carrying it?”

Action Step: Think back to your last multi-day trip. Where did your sleep fall apart? Was it temperature, comfort, or getting twisted up in your sleep system during the night? That’s your upgrade — and it might weigh less than you think.

THAT’S ALL FOR THIS WEEK
