Are You Still Buying Gear for the Hiker You Used to Be?
A few years back, I made a classic mistake…. one I thought I was too experienced to make.
I bought the same heavy leather boots I’d trusted as a guide, back when I was hiking 200 days a year. If they worked then, they’d work now… right?
Wrong. They destroyed my feet. Blisters, that broke open, on both feet… the works. I ended up selling them at a garage sale for peanuts.
The Identity Trap: It’s Not About Price
Here’s what I realised: The problem wasn’t the boots. It was me. I’d changed, but my buying habits hadn’t.
This is what I call the Identity Trap. Buying for the hiker you think you are, not the hiker you actually are.
Sound familiar?
Maybe you’ve grabbed the same ultralight setup as your favourite YouTuber, only to find it doesn’t fit your current trips.
Maybe you’re still packing for week-long expeditions, but only doing weekenders these days.
The Honest Question Most Hikers Skip
Before you buy any piece of gear, ask yourself: “Am I buying this for the hiker I am right now or the one I imagine I will be?”
It’s a simple question, but it can save you hundreds (and a lot of pain).
Are your feet the same as they were five years ago?
Are you hiking the same terrain, as often?
Has your style or pace shifted?
These days, I reach for lighter for friendly on my feet footwear. They fit my reality now. My feet have never been happier.
Action Step: Audit Before You Buy
Next time you’re eyeing new gear, try this:
Write down how often you hike
Note the terrain you actually cover
List the conditions you face most
Then ask: Does this purchase match that list?
