Could you get yourself home if your entire kit vanished off a cliff?
That’s what happened to us.

The Trip That Could’ve Broken Us

Years ago on a uni hike, one of our group tried to pass a pack down a steep section.
He slipped. The pack bounced once… then vanished into the valley several hundred meters below.

Gone: tent, stove, sleeping bag, rain gear….. and the brand new backpack
Total disaster, right?

We rallied. Backtracked to the last campsite. Crammed into spare tents. Shared food.
We made it through the night. cold, tired, but safe.
And to be honest, a little proud.

It Wasn’t Gear That Saved Us

The missing backpack contained good equipment. But the gear was gone.

What saved us?

  • Calm thinking

  • Improvisation

  • Shared experience

Gear helps. But it’s your mindset, fieldcraft, and group cohesion that gets you home.

Skills > Equipment. Every time.

Don’t Just Upgrade Your Gear, Upgrade Yourself

Before your next purchase, ask:

  • Could I handle a pack failure right now?

  • Could I keep my group safe if we lost critical gear?

  • Have I tested myself in poor conditions? Think rain, cold, fatigue?

Here’s How to Train the Real Engine

  • 🧭 Plan Your Worst-Case Exit: Know your Plan B before you go

  • 🧤 Practice Makes Prepared: Practice pitching your shelter beforehand, cook in wind

  • 🌧️ Hike in Bad Weather on Purpose: Build skill when it’s rough

  • 📝 Post-Hike Debrief: Ask “What failed?” and “What saved us?”

The more you prepare yourself, the less you need to rely on gear.

Final Takeaway

That $800 tent is useless if you can’t pitch it in 60km winds.
The titanium stove means nothing if you can’t ration fuel.
And no jacket will save poor decision-making.

This Week’s Challenge:

Do one thing to train your trail skills:

  • Test a repair

  • Repack your kit blindfolded

  • Cook in the rain

  • Try a navigation challenge

  • Simulate gear loss on a short trip

The best gear in the world can’t save a poorly planned trip.
But with the right system, you’ll be ready for anything. Rain, lost gear, or whatever nature throws your way.

We lost the pack off the peak to the right of center. We have returned many times.
