SHELTER

Sling Fin Portal 3

2 Person Tent

When there are two of us sharing I take this.

Love this tent. Ability to add hiking poles for stability is great.

Durston X Dome 2

1-2 Person Tent

New addition. Still testing but is an awesome tent. This will most likely become my solo tent as well as for shorter two person trips. Review coming soon

MSR Tarp Thru Hiker 100 wing

Tarp

We take this on most group trips of up to 4 people. A game changer on rainy days. This one has been going strong for 7 years.

PACK AND BAGS

Whippa Wollemi 90 Expedition pack

Main Pack

Australian made. Loving this pack. After my first few initial trips it has become my go to pack. The team at Whippa are also fantastic to deal with. Review here.

Ultralight Hiker Dyneema Food Bags

Food Bags

Great bags for food and general storage.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Side Entry Pod

Stuff sack for clothing

Keep your gear dry. I use a pack liner and a stuff sack for clothing. A must in Tasmania where things are always wet.

Pack Liner

A pack liner of some type is a must in order to keep your gear in your pack dry. I use a heavy duty one but various types available here.

SLEEP SYSTEM

Zenbivy Ultralight 10°F (-10°C) Goose Down

Cold season Quilt

Absolutely love this thing. So much so I bought a lighter version (25°F/-4°C) for summer time. Review here.

Ultralight Sheet

Sheet for Zenbivy

This makes such a difference to my sleep by locking in the whole system. Take it with every Zenbivy trip.

SoftTop™ Pillow by Zenbivy

Pillow

I love this pillow. You can take it without the additional down ‘soft top’ but I always tend to. Super comfy and worth the weight for someone that struggles with pillows

Thermarest Neoair XLite

Sleeping Pad

Been using this for years and still return to it often. For me. Will sometimes take Zenbivy but this one is lighter.

FlexTail Zero Pump

Pump

Simple and light.

CLOTHING

Norrøna Falketind down 750 Hooded Jacket

Down Jacket

Love this jacket. I wear it all winter. Combo of down/synthetic is great. Review here

Arc’teryx Atom AR Synthetic Hoody

Synthetic Jacket

Super warm synthetic jacket that’s great for wet conditions in Tasmania. Comes on those trips where I know it will be wet and cold and down won’t do the job. Comparison video here.

North Face Summit Future Fleece Full Zip Hoody

Fleece

Great fleece jacket. Not as breathable as Alpha direct but it makes the cut often for many of my trips. Comparison Video here.

Patagonia capilene TW thermal top (with zip)

Thermals

(Base Layer)

I love these thermals. Both this and the pants have come on every trip since 2018. Layering video here.

Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight Bottoms

Thermals

(Base Layer)

I love these thermals. Both this and the pants have come on every trip since 2018. Layering video here.

Arc'Teryx Beta AR Goretex Pro Jacket

Rain Jacket

(Heavy Duty)

This bombproof jacket has been on all of my super heavy duty scrub missions since 2018. 7 years later it still comes but is wetting out sooner requiring waterproofing more often. It has been through the ringer and doesn’t have a scratch. Review video here.

Brynje Super Thermo A-shirt

Mesh Singlet

Newer addition to the kit and it will stay. Mesh is where it’s at. My patagonia capilene thermal tops days may be limited.

Super Thermo Zip Polo Shirt w/ shoulder panels

Mesh base layer for winter

Amazing how warm this is. Comes on winter trips and will probably replace my current Patagonia thermal top on all trips.

Patagonia Torrentshell Pants

Waterproof Pants

Great mid range option that can handle their fair share of scrub

Smartwool Cuffed Beanie

Beanie

Love this beanie. Comes on every trip since 2020. Beanie video here.

Silverlight Socks

Socks

Great socks that last for years. At least 1 pair comes on every trip.

Lowa Men's Ranger III GTX

Boots

Love these boots having tried various other brands over the years.

Temres Showa 282-02

Gloves

Hands down the best gloves I’ve used for cold conditions. Very hard to source in Australia though. Gloves video here.

Montbell Chameece Liner Gloves

Camp gloves

Great glove liners that I wear around camp. I buy multiple pairs at a time as I seem to lose them or destroy them easily. Gloves video here.

FOOD AND WATER

Sawyer Squeeze

Water Filter

When I need to filter this is what i use.

MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe

Stove

Have used MSR stoves for years. I just like them. Recently have been using Pocket Rocket 2 but now onto the deluxe. Simple and effective

Titanium Spoon

Spoon

Toaks Titanium Pot

Cooking pot/bowl

I’ve used heaps of different pots over the years but these are just so light and work well. I now have a variety of Toaks pots in different size and now reconstitute meals in these. I even made a pot cosy to keep things warm. Video here on how to make one.

ELECTRONICS AND ACCESSORIES

Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar

Watch/Navigation

I tend to switch between this and the COROS Apex 2 Pro. Both are great, Fenix just has golf and surfing which I like to have as options on my watch.

Garmin inReach Mini 2

PLB/Communication

I love my inReach mini 2. Has served me well for years along with the older models.

Nitecore NU25 MCT

Headlamp

New addition to my kit. Like the Nitecore gear and it works well.

Nitecore NB20000 Gen 3 20000mAh

Powerbank

I have A LOT of powerbanks. But Nitecore seem to give me the best bang for buck. Lightweight and last well. I can get 7 days charging my phone, the odd top up of watch, inreach and headlamp out of the 20,000mah battery. I’ll often take two or a 20,000 and a 10,000 for extended trips.

Sony A7 IV Full-Frame Hybrid Camera

Camera

My pride and joy. This camera comes on every trip and records every video I make.

Sony SEL1635GM 16-35mm Lens F2.8

Camera Lens

By far the best lens I have ever owned.

Insta360 X4

Action Cam

Great camera to get those 360 drone type shots without the drone!

Insta 360 AcePro 2

Action Cam

I moved to this from GoPro in 2025 after losing said GoPro. So happy I did. This is an awesome camera and now comes with me on every single trip. Most trip footage is now filmed on this camera. The tripod handle is a must have accessory.

APPS FOR NAVIGATION

GAIA GPS - What I use for route planning and navigation on track (in conjunction with my Garmin Fenix 7X Solar Sapphire)
