Ever limped out of the bush with a bruised knee and a bruised ego?

Yeah, me too. I overplanned. Overpacked. Overestimated everyone’s capacity, including mine. It nearly wrecked the trip (and my pride).

Planning the Wrong Trip for the Right People

For years, I ran tough hikes with my core crew.
We were fit, free, and frothing for long days and steep climbs.

Then life changed:

  • Kids showed up

  • Work got intense

  • Training dropped off a cliff

But I kept planning like nothing had changed and that’s when the wheels started falling off.

The Hidden Cost of “Epic”

Big plans sound inspiring. But they often lead to:

  • Panic gear buys that never leave the pack

  • Slow, sore days with zero morale

  • Mates who say “never again” because it just wasn’t fun

Too much “epic” kills a good crew.

What Works (and Keeps People Coming Back)

Now I plan to match the group:

  • Mixed abilities? Basecamp + flexible day loops

  • Fit crew? Full traverses, big climbs, proper packs

  • Newbies? Short, scenic, light packs, good food

It’s not a step down.
It’s how you build trips everyone wants to repeat.
