Ever unpack after a trip and wonder, “Why did I carry all this?”
You’re not alone. Even after years of hiking, I found myself stuffing my pack with “just in case” gear, camp shoes, a chair, that extra fleece, only to haul them around unused.
I used to think I needed to go ultralight to fix it. Turns out, I just needed a better system. That’s how I came up with the Core-Plus Method, and it’s helped hundreds of hikers (including me) cut 2–3kg without losing comfort.
Here’s the gist:
Separate “must-have” from “nice-to-have” with one mindset shift
Rate your gear with logic, not habit
Pack for your actual route, not your fears or fantasies
Let’s break it down.
🔑 CORE: The Essentials
These are your non-negotiables, the gear that keeps you moving, fed, warm, dry, and safe.
For me, that means:
Shelter and sleep system
Rain shell and warm layers
Stove, fuel, food
First aid, navigation, repair kit
If it’s not about survival or function, it’s not Core. These go in first, every time.
➕ PLUS: The Comforts (and Sneaky Weight)
Camp chairs. Camp shoes. Pillows. Extra fleece. Spare lenses.
They seem harmless, but Plus items are where 2–3kg of stealth weight hides.
My rule?
If a Plus item won’t get used every day of the trip, it doesn’t come.
No maybes. No optimism. Just reality.

Try the Core-Plus Method next time you pack:
Lay out all your gear
Sort into two piles: Core and Plus
Ask: Is each Plus item worth the grams, for this trip?
Most hikers are surprised by how much ends up in the Plus pile, and how little they actually use.
I want to hear from you
What’s the one item you always pack “just in case” but never actually use?
Hit reply and share your packing struggle. I read every response, and you might just help another hiker lighten up too.
THAT’S ALL FOR THIS WEEK
Thanks for reading Mowser’s Musings. I hope this helps you hike further and happier.
Until next week, keep exploring.

P.S. Most hikers pack like they’ll use everything. The Core-Plus Method flips that. Try it once, and your back will thank you.
